Lipoprotein

Lipoprotein = Lipid part + Protein part (also called Apolipoprotein)

NOTE: Don’t confuse in between lipoprotein and apolipoprotein, Apolipoprotein is the protein part of lipoprotein.

Function of lipoprotein-

Transporters for phospholipids (PL), cholesterol, triacylglycerols (TAG) and other essential molecules that are insoluble in blood plasma.

Types of lipoproteins-

1. Chylomicrons: Primarily transport dietary lipids from the intestine.

2. Very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDLs): Produced by the liver, transport endogenous (internally synthesized) triglycerides.

3. Low-density lipoproteins (LDLs): Deliver cholesterol to peripheral tissues (often referred to as "bad cholesterol").

4. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs): Collect excess cholesterol from tissues and transport it back to the liver for excretion ("good cholesterol").
