A Foley catheter is a flexible tube that a clinician passes through the urethra and into the bladder to drain urine.
Material: Typically made of latex or silicone.
Balloon: A small inflatable balloon at the tip that holds the catheter in place within the bladder.
Uses: Used for patients with urinary retention, during surgery, for accurate urine output measurement, and in certain medical conditions.
Types of foley catheters:
1. Two-way foley catheter: Standard type with one channel for urine drainage and another for inflating the balloon.
2. Three-way foley catheter: Has an additional channel for bladder irrigation, commonly used in patients with hematuria or after bladder surgery.
